Lakme India: When Tata Group Chairman JRD Tata started the country's first cosmetic company, no one would have thought that one day it would become the world's most famous brand. When this cosmetic company started in 1952, its name was 'Laxmi', which we know today as Lakme. Actually, JRD Tata loved the French language and 'Lakme' in French means 'Lakshmi'. Shyamoli Verma was the first advertisement girl of Lakme India.

Shyamoli Verma is known as India's first supermodel. It was he who advertised Lakme India for the first time. That is why Shyamoli Verma is also known as the First Lakme Girl today. Shyamoli did dozens of assignments with Lakme as a model. After ruling the modeling world, she ventured into films.

Shyamoli Verma was born on 11 December 1953 in Pune. His father was a lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army. After completing her schooling from Pune, Shyamoli moved to Mumbai for further studies. After graduating from Mumbai's Sophia College for Women in the 1970s, Shyamoli started working as a telephone operator in Pune.

It is about the 1970s. RD Tata-owned Lakme Cosmetics wanted to address the negative social taboo about cosmetics in the country through its advertisements. In such a situation, he was looking for a girl with modern ideas for advertising. One day in Pune, when the country's famous fashion choreographer Jenny Naoroji's assistant caught sight of Shyamoli, he offered her an advertisement for Lakme Cosmetics. Shyamoli was then signed for a 3-year modeling contract with Lakme Cosmetics'.

Shyamoli became the first 'Lakme girl'

In the 1970s, Lakme Cosmetics made Shyamoli Verma its first brand ambassador. Lakme advertisements made Shyamoli a household name as the 'Lakme Girl'. When 'cosmetics' was known as a 'taboo' in India, Shyamoli Verma broke this image of the country by endorsing several cosmetics brands. After this she became famous for advertisements of cosmetics products in the country. After a year in the modeling industry, Shyamali went on to appear in commercials for Nescafe and the Doordarshan network.

After Lakme Cosmetics, Shyamoli Verma signed a contract with French fashion designer Pierre Cardin. Shyamoli moved to Paris in 1980. Based in Paris, she also worked with top fashion brands including Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Vogue, Maxim, Karl Lagerfeld, Max Mara, Comme des Garçons and many more. After this she came back to Pune in 1989 and started her career as a fashion choreographer.

Shyamoli Verma acted in the famous film Kamasutra: A Tale of Love in 1996. This was followed in 2001 by Everybody Says I'm Fine! Was seen in the film. His first and last Bollywood film was 'Rog' released in 2005. The hero of this film was Irrfan Khan.

Shyamoli Verma is married to Abhijit Chatterjee. Abhijeet and Shyamoli have a daughter named Akanksha. Shyamoli Verma is now 64 years old and lives in Pune. As a fashion choreographer, she has organized several exhibitions in India, France and Germany. Apart from this, she has also choreographed for Fashion Institute, Fashion Designer and Trade Fair.
